Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick
Did you know that the word “Christ” comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew Messiah, which means “anointed” (CCC 436)? From ancient times, in the liturgical traditions of both Eastern and Western Church, there has existed the practice of anointing of the sick with blessed oil.
Sacramental Guidelines
By sacred anointing, and by the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. Of all the seven sacraments of the Church, Anointing of the Sick is especially intended to strengthen those who are being tried by illness. This sacrament is given to those who are seriously ill by anointing them on the forehead and hands with duly blessed oil. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is not just for those who are at the point of death. It is fitting for a person to receive the sacrament if they suffer from serious illness or infirmity, or just prior to a serious operation (CCC 1499-1523).
How to Request the Sacrament
At St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is available upon request. If you know of a parishioner in need of an anointing please make arrangements with one of our clergy, or contact the parish office to arrange for a priest to visit and minister the sacrament.
