"A Catholic Parish Family"
History of St. Ann Chapel
Beautiful St. Ann Catholic Chapel, located in the Ebarb Community in Northwest Louisiana, was officially dedicated and blessed April 1, 1935 by Bishop Desmond of the Diocese of Alexandria.
Planning and Construction
Planning for St. Ann Church actually began in 1920 when Father Bokhoven, Pastor at St. Joseph Church in Zwolle, requested and received $165.00 from the Extension Society to build a Chapel in the Ebarb Community. On April 15, 1934, a meeting, under the leadership of Fr. Howard of St. Joseph Church in Zwolle, was held to plan construction of the Church. Two days later, the area people met and pledged materials, time, and money.
Property and Land
On November 9, 1937, Mrs. Mary S. Ebarb (Mrs. Phillip Ebarb) donated one acre of land. The property was surveyed the same day. In the fall of 1934, on November 12, the ground was broken for the new Church.
Loyal and Skilled Carpenters
Bill McDonald of Zwolle served as head carpenter. He was assisted by local carpenters Homer Ezernack, Pete "Hicks'' Procell, Joe Sepulvado, and Alec Sepulvado. Bill McDonald traveled from Zwolle in a mule driven wagon. During the week, he would stay with the family of Albert Ebarb to work on building the church.
Completion and Dedication
In December 1934, St. Ann Catholic Church was complete. Masses would be held as often as possible. St. Ann Church is the mission chapel of St. Joseph Parish.
